ALU Racer [SORRCA Class 2]

Say hello to the latest version of ALU Racer, my very first scale rock crawler RC concept build developed to evolve an undisputed SORRCA Class 2 RC crawler champion strictly for competition purposes.

ALU Racer Concept

I was 40 when decided to take a deep dive into scale rock crawler RC. Because of my age and as I was totally convinced that I was seriously commited to go along this road, I didn’t want to waste my time to follow the small step strategy like getting a cheap entry RTR product and slowly stepping up with time and money invested.

I chose the giant step strategy instead. I wanted to evolve in this hobby as fast as possible. Again, my commitment was clear for me, so don’t follow my way if you are not sure about the level of your own commitment. This hobby costs a lot so you can burn a bigger amount of money if you change your mind on the way.

So I decided to go ahead as fast as possible.

The Best Of Everything

I developed a very simple tactic: I create a rig for scale rock crawler RC competition purposes built with the latest technologies and the best of every single part. So f*cking smart, eh?

The first challenge was choosing the chassis. For a short time MST CFX-W, HoBao DC1 were the two platforms I was devided. Then the TFL T-11 Pro chassis came to face with its full metal concept.

If you know, this is the Axial SCX10II chassis copied, manufactured of full metal and carbon parts and sold the naked chassis for almost two times more bucks for us by our chinese friends than a HoBao DC1 or an MST CFX-W RTR.

But this was what I was looking for, rememeber: the best of everything. And it must be started with a full metal chassis as a platform, eh? This was the most expensive but the most solid platform I could choose for a 1/10 scale rock crawler RC competition rig concept.

The name ALU Racer was born and the foundation of my RC crawler was layed.

As Scale As Possible

While the #1 priority of the ALU Racer concept was to succeed in competition circumstances, the #2 priority was to stay as scale as possible.

As hard bodies are not serving well on rock crawler competitions because of their weight that lifts the center of gravity drastically, for first I chose the HoBao DC1 Clear Body Kit as a compromise having the weight of a lexan body but with a scale outfit and details.

The very first round of RC Veszprém Trial Championship which is the Hungarian National Campionship Series as well proved that this choice really s*cked. The HoBao DC1 body lifted the center of gravity too high despite of being a lexan body. I was totally splashed during my race. The ALU Racer was continuously twirled down from the cliff. Almost half of my final penalty points was generated by a single crash. First comp, big lessons, brother.

I decided right there to change the body concept and develop it from scratch to tune ALU Racer to a hardcore competition rig as for the body as well.

My second choice as a body was the Pro-Line 1946 Dodge Power Wagon Clear Body with a scale intercooler and grill set designed by RC Nerds and produced by Shapeways. In the first step I dropped the lexan bed, only kept the front body. Insted of the stock lexan bed I started to develop a light-weight scale flat-bed concept to completely control the weight and scale factor and having a badass scale rock crawler rig as a result.

SORRCA Class 2 Compliance

During the works with ALU Racer I faced that there were as many RC rock crawler competition rules as many comps worldwide. After comparing the most important rules and classifications I found that classifying ALU Racer as a SORRCA Class 2 RC vehicle was the best fit.

With a SORRCA Class 2 compliant rig I have the freedom with building the concept and increasing the comp performance and this class is largely covered by one of the classes of most local or regional rock crawler competitions.
